Benefits of Granite Countertops

Whether you're building a new house or renovating one that you already own, a big consideration is what type of countertops to install. While there are many different types of materials on the market to choose from, granite has the benefit of being both highly durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Not only are granite countertops long lasting, but they come in a wide range of colors and patterns so you can easily customize them to match the style and decor of your kitchen. Since granite is a natural material, no two slabs will look exactly alike, giving your home a customized appearance.

Although granite may cost a bit more than its synthetic counterparts such as plastic laminate or even manmade stone, the investment will be worth it. You'll have to replace the countertops less often, and they'll most likely stay imperfection-free throughout their life span.

Here are some other benefits of installing granite countertops in your kitchen:

1. Sanitary

Since granite countertops are sealed before installation, they won't absorb moisture that could cause mold, mildew, and bacteria growth. Non-sealed porous materials can harbor germ growth, making the surface unsanitary even after it's been wiped down. If you have granite countertops, you simply have to clean them on a regular basis to sanitize, as no harsh chemicals are needed.

2. Stain-, Heat-, and Chip-Resistant

In addition to not being subject to bacterial growth, granite countertops are also highly resistant to heat, staining, and chipping.

Unlike with other types of countertops, you can place hot pots and pans on the granite without damaging them. You also won't have to worry about the countertops getting unsightly chips or scratches from normal wear and tear. To be safe, always cut food on a cutting board rather than directly on the granite.

In most cases, you won't have to worry about food or liquids staining the stone as it won't absorb the debris. However, it's still important to wipe up any dark liquids, such as red wine or coffee, as soon as possible.

3. Easy to Clean

On a daily basis, simply clean the granite with a soft, non-abrasive cloth or sponge and a non-alkaline soap and water mixture. You can also use a spray cleaner recommended for use on natural stone.

Avoid using any acid-based cleaners, such as vinegar, or solutions containing citrus, on the granite as they can damage the sealant over time. If you want to give the granite a deep-cleaning, mix a 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water in a spray bottle and apply it to the stone, wiping it dry with a cloth.
